LUNI, THE SPLENDOR OF ANTIQUITY, WHERE THE VINEYARDS DRAW STRENGTH FROM HISTORY …
“La Baia del Sole” winery is located in Luni on the border between Liguria and Tuscany in the municipality of Ortonovo. It was founded in 1985 from a love for their land, a passion for the vine and from a tradition of cultivation that the Federici family has handed down over 4 generations.
Not surprisingly, the company name and logo chosen by Giulio Federici, incorporates the great history which distinguishes this territory.
Luni was founded by the Romans in 177 BC as an outpost against the Apuan Ligurians in their war to conquer the Italian peninsula. It was famous for its port where the water came inland creating a bay from which boats departed full of of Apuan Alps Carrara marble, Apennine forest timber, and cheeses and wines produced in the locality of Sarticola on the renowned Colline del Sole. This is testified to in the writings of Marziale and also of Pliny the Elder, who, in the 1st century A.D in his Naturalis Historia wrote: “Vinum Luna Palman Habet”
During the Augustan era, Luni experienced a new period of splendor, and subsequently during the Julio-Claudian era, thanks to the nearby marble, it was transformed into a monumental city. In the 5th century it became an episcopal see, signalling the importance of the city which in 272 AD had also given the world Pope Eutychian.
From this time, the slow decline of Luni began. In 642, the Rotari Lombard invasions left the city in ruins; later, in addition to Frankish invasions, Luni was sacked by the Saracens and in 860 AD, the Normans invaded and destroyed the city.
These days you can still admire the remains of what was once one of the most powerful maritime cities of its time.
Just a stone’s throw from the estate is the Museo Archeologico Nazionale and the emblem of the city of Luni: the Roman amphitheatre.
Passion for our work
In our work we are driven by passion and the desire to grow by improving, so much so that we continuously invest effort and resources for planting new vineyards and for the enhancement of the existing historical ones.
Cantine Federici and the wines that it offers come from a project focused around a passion for the family tradition of viticulture and the deep emotions that it represents. Passion, patience and experience are the elements that underpin our identity as vintners. We believe that we are ambassadors of the culture of our land and this impels us to concern ourselves with care of the environment, climate, vineyards and men to produce wines distinguished by a unique character.
To produce these wines whilst respecting our land means first and foremost, a focus on the quality of life and on the rediscovery of the fundamental values of civilisation to which we belong – values such as authenticity, sincerity and tradition. To leave a legacy for future generations of healthy lands on which to continue producing excellent wines and products is what we care about most.
